More than a recital

Every show tells a story, and every dancer has a place in it.

An original story

Almost every recital is a full story, usually original and written around our own dancers.

Room to lead

Dancers ready for a bigger challenge earn lead roles, building confidence and real leadership.

Brave counts

Our youngest dancers are supported on stage, whether they shine or shed a few tears. Every dancer receives an award for being brave enough to step out.

The road to recital

A 15-week semester, and every class counts.

  1. Week 1Measurements

Costume measurements on the first day.

  2. Weeks 2–5Costume try-ons

In-stock costumes the next week. Ordered costumes within 5 weeks. Choreography starts week 5.

  3. Weeks 7–8Picture day

Costume photos for the program and backstage. Required.

  4. Weeks 8–12Adjustments

Alterations based on how costumes fit and moved. Choreography set by weeks 10–12.

  5. ~3 weeks before the endSyllabus testing

Dancers earn marks by showing they can do the skills for their level correctly.

  6. Final weeksFinal fittings

Re-try altered costumes, clean the dance, then pack and label for the theatre.

  7. Show dayRecital

    Every class takes the stage.

Technique is taught in every class, every week, all semester long.

Picture day lands mid-semester on purpose. It gives our photographer time to edit program photos, our seamstresses time to make adjustments, and us time to order anything extra before the show.

Why attendance matters

Costume fittings

We try on costumes in class, make adjustments and make sure each one works for the dance.

Safety in the dance

Group lifts and formation changes depend on every dancer being there to learn their spot.

Room for sick days

We set choreography early to allow for illness, but a full class helps us the most.

Picture day is a must

We photograph every dancer in costume. Backstage helpers use these photos to make sure every dancer makes it on stage. If your dancer can’t attend, please let the office know right away.

Our photo & video partner

Thistle & Quill Photography

We partner with Thistle & Quill Photography for professional-quality photos and video of every show.

  • Class group photo

One digital class photo for every student. Included in tuition.

  • Full recital video

A digital download of the whole show for every family. Included in tuition.

Phones away: every show is professionally recorded, so you can sit back and watch. Extra photos and recital merch are available separately.

Things to know

Costumes

Each class has its own dance and its own costume.

Stage makeup

Every dancer wears makeup. Stage lights wash out faces, and makeup helps the audience see expressions.

Backstage

For dancers’ safety, only staff and approved volunteers are allowed backstage and in the green room.

Tickets

Everyone watching needs a ticket for each show. Ticket sales keep the State Theatre running for our community.
